Signing Day Open Thread – News, Commentary, and Discussion

Well, you’re probably looking at the site and going, woah, something is different. Or if this is your first visit you’re wondering what in the Sam Hill is this guy talking about. Either way, today, which just so happens to be one of the biggest blogging days of the year, we have officially unveiled Fansided 3.0. This new layout is in the process of going network wide to all of our sites.

The main feature will be the Hub. Which will be a one stop location for links, tweets, videos, news, quotes and more. Pretty much everything Tennessee Volunteers. The goal, get as much information and content on this site for you. We will talk more on the hub later, but now, on to more pressing matters. . . It’s Signing Day.

This thread will be open all day for discussion. We will be featuring breaking news as it comes in along with commentary.

Rumors are circulating that McNeill may jump ship to Oklahoma State last second, giving the Vols just enough time to sweat.

LB Kenneth Bynum – Delayed Commitment

Bynum is committed to Cincinnati, but Tennessee entered the race late, prompting Bynum to delay his commitment, which could mean a switch.

Good luck, you guys! Should be an awesome day.

  • Sam Scott

Alright, alright I’m finally up. FIRST BIG NEWS OF THE DAY. Cordarelle Patterson, the top JUCO receiver has in fact CHOSEN TENNESSEE! That’s a big one right there folks.

  • Sam Scott

Got some commits coming in early Lewis, Watson, King, Croom, Bullock, and McCuller have all signed.

  • Sam Scott

DT Korren Kirven has signed with Alabama. Well Shoot. Didn’t think we would get him. But thought he’d at least go to Tech.

  • Sam Scott

Pig Howard just signed. Going to be a heck of a slot WR.

  • Sam Scott

Daniel Gray who was considering West Virginia, has stuck with the Vols.

  • Sam Scott

Danny O’ Brien the tackle out of Michigan has signed.

  • Sam Scott

According to Rivals, Tennessee’s class is currently #13. Let’s break that Top Ten.

  • Sam Scott

Phew, survived the scare from McNeill. Thought he might flip to Ok. State, but he’s a Vol.

  • Sam Scott

All of our star ratings come from Rivals.

  • Sam Scott

Vols add another 4-Star receiver, Drae Bowles. Wide Receiver U is back.

  • Sam Scott

Of the Vols Signees 7 Offense, 11 Defense, and 1 Specialist. Still waiting on two commits to “officially” sign Bourque and Patterson.

  • Sam Scott

Updated Players to Watch for Today – Leggett, Davis, and Borque.

  • Sam Scott

I think the swaying factor with Leggett will be if it’s worth the risk of trying to get him into school or not.

  • Sam Scott

Just posted a LaDarrell McNeil highlight on the Hub. Watch it, the guy can straight lay some wood.

  • Sam Scott

Only Americans would literally watch a video of a fax machine, yet here I am.

  • Sam Scott

Cordarelle Patterson is officially a Vol. HUGE

  • Sam Scott

Davante Bourque is a Vol. All of the commits are in. Only story left today is Quinshad Davis. It’s been a really good signing day.

  • Sam Scott

Tennessee’s class is now ranked 13th on Rivals. Solid recovery after losing Santos and Peters.

  • GageArnold

Crazy day here. LaDarrell McNeil is a player and a difference maker as are Bourque, Patterson, McCullers, and Sentimore. Also note, Vols are highest ranked team in the recruiting rankings with a losing record (17th).

  • Shrum412

So you’re saying we are gonna be throwing the ball

    • Sam Scott

      @Shrum412 Maybe. . .

  • Shrum412

Haha, Drew Brees currently has the NCAA record for pass attempts in a game. His OC? Jim Chaney. If we can’t run the ball again, I expect Tyler Bray to break that record, and then break his record, haha.

  • GageArnold

I love LaDarrell McNeil… I think him and McCullers make BIG impacts on the defense this year. Also Patterson, obviously, transforms the offense a ton. You now have three 1st round draft pick talents at WR… Hunter and Patterson out wide with Da’Rick in the slot… That’s scary.

    • Sam Scott

@GageArnold Have you seen his highlight video? it’s posted in the hub. The kid can knock people out.

  • http://www.allfortennessee.com/ wwarren9

Finally done with class, time for some thoughts…

-DeAnthony Arnett didn’t leave because of his dad. He left because Cordarelle Patterson and Jason Croom are going to be monsters at WR. Absolutely cannot wait to see them both on the field.

-I am seven inches shorter and 220 pounds lighter than Daniel McCullers. This is a terrifying thought.

-If Dooley can get Kenneth Bynum to switch his commitment from UC to UT it’ll be a lot bigger than most think. Keeps the LB slot from losing much depth, regardless of Bynum’s quality.

-I’m never really worried about where a class ranks, but if it filled its most prominent needs. Tennessee has done that (especially if they add Bynum late) and has made the WR position a force to be reckoned with on a national scale, not just in the SEC.

-It feels nice to be at the stage where we can have a recruiting class and not worry about if we’re tossing scholarships out left and right to players just because we need depth. I feel like 2012 could be a big step back in the right direction for Tennessee and it all starts in Atlanta. Can’t wait.

    Go Vols.

  • Sam Scott

I think Bynum will come. The fact that he didn’t sign today just screams that he is going to flip to Tennessee. That’d be great to have him.

  • GageArnold

Agreed, Bynum will be a Vol. AND since we didn’t sign a full class and only signed 21 (22 pending Bynum) we can back count 3 early enrollee’s next year in their place like Alabama did this season. Next year could be a GIGANTIC recruiting class. Brace yo’self.

    • Sam Scott

@GageArnold What were you saying about UNC next year with Pittman?

      • GageArnold

@Sam Scott Pittman and Graham are already hitting the Carolina’s that are loaded with talent and have the potential to pull a HUGE number of talented kids from there.

  • Sam Scott

What were you saying about North Carolina next year?

  • http://www.allfortennessee.com/ wwarren9

I’m so ready to see this receiver lineup on the field…five-wide sets all day every day, forget a running game.

    WR1: Hunter

    WR2: Da’Rick/Patterson

    WR3: Patterson/Da’Rick

    WR4: Croom

    WR5: Zach Rogers/Bowles

Alton Howard and Devrin Young returning kicks will be a blast.

    • Sam Scott

@wwarren9 Probably one of the best receiving corps in the country.

      • http://www.allfortennessee.com/ wwarren9

@Sam Scott There are a few teams we’ll be in that category with – Clemson and USC certainly come to mind – but I feel like we should have the most talented group of receivers in the SEC, especially since Arkansas lost their three best receivers.

        • Sam Scott

@wwarren9 They have as talented players, but do they have the depth?

        • jayteewhite22

@Sam Scott @wwarren9 We have 3 receiver coming in this year that can make an impact right away I think. Some of them will not get the chance much this year because they may not be needed.

  • jayteewhite22

I think UT is finally returning to it’t title of Wide Receiver U and I love it. Holy crap, this crop is going to to be good.

    • Sam Scott

@jayteewhite22 Weapons everywhere. Haha. No more Bray staring at Da’rick.

      • jayteewhite22

@Sam Scott And I’m hoping that Pig can maybe be a good compliment to Devrin in the special teams. He is extremely versatile.

        • Sam Scott

@jayteewhite22 I think he will eventually replace Devrin. Cordarelle can return kicks as well.

        • Shrum412

@Sam Scott @jayteewhite22 Devrin is going to have to show he can take a hit or two if he wants to keep his job. You can’t consistently run out of bounds to avoid contact. Especially when they person chasing you is the kicker.

        • jayteewhite22

@Shrum412 @Sam Scott I agree with you on that. He has speed and agility but that will only take you so far in the SEC.

        • Sam Scott

@jayteewhite22@Shrum412 What bothered me was how he would take one hit, then next return, he would just take a touchback, even when he had plenty of room.

        • Shrum412

@Sam Scott @jayteewhite22 Let’s hope an off-season of workouts will give him some extra padding and confidence.

        • Sam Scott

@Shrum412@jayteewhite22 Maybe a little competition too.

  • jayteewhite22

Love some of the signees on defense too. Keeping McNeil and adding some depth to the DT position with McCullers and O’Brien was great. We need some guys there.

    • Sam Scott

It was a pretty good day for us. Patterson was huge. And we held on to Bourque and McNeil. Lot of good things.

  • Sam Scott

In other news, Vandy brought in it’s best recruiting class ever.

    • http://www.allfortennessee.com/ wwarren9

@Sam Scott So they finished 13th instead of 14th in the SEC? Good for them. I’m waiting for a Clay Travis article due at any moment about how Vandy will win the East this year.

      • Sam Scott

@wwarren9 They finished 9th in the SEC. For Vanderbilt, that’s incredible. Beat Arkansas, Miss. State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, and Kentucky,

      • Shrum412

@wwarren9 @Sam Scott Gross, don’t talk about that.

        • Sam Scott

@Shrum412@wwarren9 I hate Vanderbilt, I don’t like James Franklin, but this is not “Same Old Vandy” like FeelsLike98.com wants everyone to think.

        • Shrum412

@Sam Scott @wwarren9 Haha, I agree, they aren’t the same fold overs, but they make me sick and I don’t want to talk about them. They make me mad, haha

  • natkscott

How much money did Alabama spend on players? I’m guessing at least $360k. You know, double the Scam Newton price

    • jayteewhite22

@natkscott I’m convinced that is how Arkansas got Peters.

      • Sam Scott

Now, now, let’s not jump to conclusions.
