It was a busy weekend for Tennessee athletics, let’s take a look at the action and the results from the weekend.

Men’s Basketball

The Vols enjoyed a decisive win over the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday.  Tennessee defeated Kentucky by a score of 88-58, in game where the Vols led by as many as 39.   The win kept Tennessee’s NCAA tournament hopes alive.  The Vols still need to have a strong finish to the season, but they’ve put themselves in a position that many didn’t think was possible a month ago.

Women’s Basketball

The Lady Vols extended their winning streak to three games, after defeating Vanderbilt 83-64 on Sunday. Tennessee improved to 11-1 in the SEC and 20-5 overall with the win. The Lady Vols had a week off after their win over Ole Miss the previous Sunday.  Meighan Simmons continued to play well, she led the Lady Vols in scoring for the third straight game. Tennessee stays home to play Auburn this Thursday.

Baseball

Tennessee kicked off their season in Las Vegas on Friday against UNLV.  The Vols dropped the opener 10-9 Friday night in a back and forth game.  Tennessee scored four runs to take a 6-3 lead in the top of the sixth, before UNLV answered with four in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead. Tennessee would go back ahead with a two run seventh inning, before UNLV took the lead for good, scoring three in the bottom of the eighth. Tennessee rallied in the top of the ninth, but fell short.

UNLV and Tennessee played a double header on Saturday.  The Vols dropped game one 5-4, but won the night cap 8-3 for their first win of the season.

The series concluded on Sunday with a thrilling 14 inning affair that the Vols lost 3-2. UNLV’s Joey Swanner hit a walk off single to give the Rebels the victory.

The Vols will return to Knoxville for a three game series against Arizona State, that kicks off Friday at 5:00 PM EST.

Lady’s Softball

Tennessee participated this weekend in the USF softball classic.  The Lady Vols won each of their five games this weekend, culminating with a 8-2 win over NC State to win the tournament in Tampa, FL.  The 4th ranked Volunteers are now 10-0 on the season and will play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic beginning Thursday.  The tournament will be held in Cathedral City, CA.
