"Nathan Peterman used a checklist to manage his second summer as a Tennessee quarterback. The redshirt freshman believes he crossed off every item he felt he needed to address, and as the Volunteers open practice today, Peterman hopes his summer investments pay off as he continues competing to become Tennessee’s starter.“That’s something I hit on with the coaches, is going into the summer from the spring, that these are the points that we need to get better at,” the 6-foot-2, 221-pound Floridian said Thursday as the Vols reported for training camp. “I tried to rep them as much as I could and get better.“I just tried to focus on accuracy. I reviewed all the film from the spring a lot and just tried to make improvements based on the reads and the post-snap recognition of the defense. Hopefully that’ll show here in camp.”"

"Five Big Things to watch as the Tennessee football team starts fall camp on Friday:1 Every Rep CountsFour quarterbacks want to be Tennessee’s starter but only one will. Justin Worley and Nathan Peterman have a head start. Maximizing every opportunity is imperative for newcomers Joshua Dobbs and Riley Ferguson.2 Carry OverThe coaching staff demands that the players retain what they learned of new schemes in the spring. There’s no time to go back to Square One. This is especially true for a defense switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 look."

From Rocky Top Talk

"We’ve been doing this 10 Questions series in each of the last four preseasons, and every single year this one shows up. Which means stuff ain’t getting any better. So here’s the stat again: from 1990-2005 Tennessee had at least 28 sacks every year, including five seasons of 40+ sacks with the pinnacle of 50 sacks in 2000. And then here are the numbers from the last seven years:"

"There’s no big circle in red permanent ink around Aug. 31 on Curt Maggitt’s calendar.Instead, the Tennessee linebacker simply hopes he can put a large X on today when it ends.More than eight months after the ACL tear that wiped out the last two-plus games of his injury-riddled sophomore season, Maggitt enters the start of training camp this afternoon with the plan of playing in the Volunteers’ opening game in 29 days. He’s aware, though, that the last part of the path to return may be the toughest.“I’m taking it day by day,” Maggitt said Thursday afternoon after spending an hour in the training room. “I wouldn’t really say if it’s firm or not. It’s just taking it day by day and doing the most I can and the best I can to get better. It’s hard to say, because the past two weeks I’ve made some big gains."
