Intensity wasn’t hard to find on the field during the Vols’ second practice of camp.

The portion of practice open to the media had plenty of it. Organized chaos, a phrase used a lot when describing a Butch Jones led offense, abounded on Saturday.

Here’s a few quick notes from practice today, specifically wide receiver notes.

  • The Vols may have lost a lot at the wide receiver position from last season, but they have the look of a potential dominant receiving group, albeit they’re still raw.
  • Jason Croom is an imposing receiver and will likely be a major assest in the blocking game.
  • Pig Howard, Ryan Jenkins and Jacob Carter were three of the most consistent receivers on Saturday.
  • True Freshman Marquez North is raw, but responded well to wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni’s instructions and criticisms
  • Ryan Jenkins made nice up field moves and caught the ball extremely well.
  • Pig Howard drew several compliments from Azzanni.
  • Vincent Dallas had a few drops and missteps, but immediately recovered and was complimented by Azzanni.
  • True freshman Paul Harris had a rocky start to individual drills, but recovered and was praised by Azzanni.
  • Josh Smith drew the ire of Azzanni several times today, after missteps and drops.
  • Justin Worley looked to be the most comfortable under center.
  • Josh Dobbs has very nice mechanics, good release, but was a bit off target at time.
  • Riley Ferguson has a lot of zip on his pass, but is a little behind Dobbs in terms of mechanics.
  • Rajion Neal caught the ball very well today.
  • Neal, Alden Hill and Marlin Lane all performed well during individual running back drills. All three drew praise from running backs coach Robert Gillespie at separate times.
  • Finally, defensive backs coach Willie Martinez is an intense guy.
