Day 3 of fall camp for the Tennessee football team showed good promise for several players, but also proved there is still a ways to go before the first game against Austin Peay on August 31. While many players look the part, we will see if they can step up and display their abilities over the next few weeks. The position battles and players trying to rise up the depth chart will be the main points of discussion.

Quick Notes:

  • Coach Azzanni pays very close attention to detail with his wide receivers. Several times he pointed out mistakes while lining up.  He showed he expects the receivers to help the others know their spots. Drae Bowles really seems to be taking a roll in helping the freshmen.
  • Nathan Peterman and Justin Worley (Preseason co-starters at QB) showed nice touch on 25-30 yard seam routes. Accuracy on roll outs was a slight issue.  Both Worley and Peterman missed badly on a couple of 10 yard out routes. Freshman Riley Ferguson has a strong arm and showed nice accuracy on many of his reps.
  • At one point during QB rollout drills, Coach Butch Jones grabbed a pad and pressured the QB’s.
  • Mechanically, freshman Joshua Dobbs looked very fluid.  Peterman also showed a nice motion and has good mobility.
  • During specialist drills, Punter Matt Darr looked crisp. Muffed punts resulted in pushups. Pig Howard had some trouble in this area and dropped down for a few sets.
  • The running backs looked good going through drills and catching passes coming out of the backfield. I couldn’t help but notice Marlin Lane and Alden Hill.  At one point, I noticed Maryland transfer Justus Pickett being corrected for how he received the ball from the quarterback.
