After a colossal letdown with the San Diego Chargers in 2012, Robert Meachem is returning to the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports on Tuesday afternoon.

Meachem, who was drafted with the 27th overall pick in 2007 by the Saints, was released this past weekend by the Chargers, after only one season with the team.

The former Tennessee Volunteer standout signed a multiple year contract with San Diego before the 2012 season. Meachem was expected to be the team’s number one receiver. Instead he posted career low numbers of 207 receiving yards with two touchdowns on 14 receptions.

Meachem played four seasons (he missed his rookie season due to a knee injury) for the Saints, posting career numbers in 2009 with 45 receptions for 722 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Saints drafted Meachem in the first round after he led the SEC in receiving his junior year at Tennessee. During that season Meachem caught 71 passes for 1,298 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Terms of Meachem’s deal with the Saints have not yet been detailed.
