If this article had been written before the Orange and White game, I would have told you that the Vols are entering the fall with two quarterbacks leading the QB competition.

The Orange and White game changed the plans, however.

After completing 6 of 9 passes for 199 yards and 3 TD’s (and chipping in 59 yards and a score on the ground), sophomore Joshua Dobbs has firmly reasserted himself into the quarterback competition.

The perception surrounding the Vols was that the QB race was down to Justin Worley and Riley Ferguson, a perception further solidified by Butch Jones himself in the week leading up to the Orange and White game.

While Worley did nothing to remove himself from the competition with a solid Orange and White game, Ferguson may have taken a small step backwards during the scrimmage. Ferguson tossed the only interception of the spring game and was sacked three times in the 1st half. He did have a much better 2nd half, but he still looked the least impressive of the three QB’s.

Each quarterback brings with him a different blend of athleticism and leadership, and finding the one with the right mix will be essential for the offense to be productive this season.

Dobbs’ outstanding performance has made the QB competition a little more blurry once again, and the Vols will go into the fall with 3 quarterbacks vying for the starting role at QB for the Big Orange.
