Vols commit Andrew Butcher has received a lot of attention in the past couple of weeks for comments he made about Alabama after Tennessee received a commitment from stud defensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie.

Those comments are now the first thing you think about when hearing Butcher’s name, but that shouldn’t be the case.

Butcher is extremely important to Tennessee’s efforts to rebuild their defensive line.

The Vols are especially thin at defensive end and Butcher is exactly the type of player they need.

He can get to the quarterback in a hurry and defend against the run.

But more importantly, he can defend the edge.

Tennessee had a lot of trouble with mobile quarterbacks in 2013. A player like Butcher would’ve been extremely beneficial against someone like Auburn’s Nick Marshall.

The offenses across college football are getting faster. The Vols aren’t well equipped on defense to handle those quicker offenses.

Butcher won’t sold the Volunteers’ defensive problems, but he’ll certainly be one part of the solution.
