Vols head coach Butch Jones met with the media on Tuesday to discuss the Vols’ upcoming matchup with Arkansas State and to close the book on the Utah State win.

If you were unable to catch the press conference, here are the high points of what Jones had to say.

  • Jones was not happy with Tennessee’s offense and felt the team should’ve had more points by halftime. He also felt there were too many three-and-outs near the end of the first half.
  • Jones was very unhappy with the yards per carry average of his running backs, even though he stated he doesn’t put much stock into average. He said the running backs weren’t consistent.
  • Jones complimented the fans and the student section, saying “We have the best football environment in the country”.
  • Cam Sutton was complimented by Jones. He said “Sutton had a big hand in helping us win the football game. I thought his concentration was outstanding”.
  • Jones praised wide receiver Von Pearson, saying “Von brings it every day. He always works hard and loves to compete. He has great make up and now it’s consistency”.
  • Jones admitted that running back Jalen Hurd needs to improve in pass protection.
  • Jones also said that Pig Howard wouldn’t have scored if it wasn’t for a block from Jalen Hurd.
  • Chris Weatherd’s role should increase according to Jones, who said “You’ll see his role continue to elevate. He’s a big-body individual who can run. He’s remarkable and will get better.”
  • Tackling was “decent” according to Jones.
  • Jones said the kickers will continue to compete.
