Vols’ Offensive Coordinator Makes Funny Quip About Butch Jones & Officials

If you watched the Tennessee Vols’ game against Oklahoma this past weekend, you know the officiating wasn’t exactly perfect.

There were quite a few holds against Oklahoma that weren’t called and most of those were captured on Twitter.

Of course, as pointed out by many folks, some say there’s holding on every play. While this may certainly be true, I don’t want to to hold myself to such an all-encompassing statement. But I digress.

On top of the holding calls that went against Tennessee, there was also a botched fumble review.

It was pretty clear that the Oklahoma player lost possession of the ball before his knee hit the ground. It was also obvious that Tennessee defensive back Cam Sutton recovered the fumble.

Pretty easy call, right?

Apparently not.

The call on the field stood and Oklahoma kept the ball.

UT head coach Butch Jones was unnerved by the missed call, to put it lightly.

On Monday, during a guest appearance at the Knoxville Quarterback Club, Vols offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian was asked about Jones’ reaction after the fumble. Here’s what he had to say, according to UTSports.com.

"I think he said “Thanks for giving it your best effort” — Mike Bajakian"

I doubt Jones, in the middle of what was a close game that point, was able to maintain the amount of tactfulness required for such a response. His actual response probably had some words included that aren’t suitable for network television.

Jones is a fiery guy. He clearly wasn’t happy with the official. At halftime, when asked about the exchange, Jones said “That’s between me and the official”.

He might have been livid, but there aren’t many coaches classier than Butch Jones.
