Tennessee’s bye week could not have come at a better time.

The Vols are fighting off the injury bug after losing several key positional players to nagging injuries.

One of those players is sophomore wide receiver Josh Smith.

Smith, who started against Oklahoma in place of injured wide receiver Von Pearson, suffered a high ankle sprain in Tennessee’s loss to the Sooners.

The early estimate on Smith’s recovery is 2-6 weeks, which means he could possibly return against Georgia on September 27.

Vols head coach Butch Jones wouldn’t rule out Smith on Monday, calling him “day-to-day”. Jones added that Smith would sit out practice this week and be reevaluated heading into next week.

It would be huge for the Vols if Smith can play against Georgia. Especially if Von Pearson is unable to go.

Smith has 10 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown in three games this season. He had 12 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown in 11 games as a freshmen last season.

Even if Pearson is in the lineup, Smith is still an important cog in the wheel of Tennessee’s passing attack.
