Vols Football: Derrell Scott To Make Trip To Georgia

The Tennessee Volunteers did their best to get healthy during the bye week.

And while not everyone will be available against Georgia, the Vols will have at least one player they haven’t had all season — true freshman running back Derrell Scott.

Scott was signed by Tennessee this past February as a four-star running back out of Havelock, NC. He sustained a foot injury during fall practice and has yet to play in a game this season.

On Tuesday, after practice, Butch Jones announced that Scott would travel with the team to Athens for the Vols’ game against Georgia on Saturday afternoon.

Jones added that Scott would “help us”.

I still think Scott is a candidate to possibly be redshirted this season — even with the departure of Treyvon Paulk.

Marlin Lane and Jalen Hurd are clearly the Volunteers’ top two running backs. Devrin Young plays a unique role and Justus Pickett has been getting garbage time reps for the Vols.

If one of Tennessee’s running backs gets injured, you can throw out the Derrell Scott redshirt theory. But if by some miracle the Vols are able to stay healthy, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jones preserve a year of eligibility for Scott.

Even with Marlin Lane moving on after this season, the Vols have an extremely bright future at the running back position. Next season, in addition to Hurd and Scott, the Vols will also have Alvin Kamara and Rocky Reid coming to town.

That’s what good recruiting will do.
