Former Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Jim Bob Cooter has been promoted to offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions after Joe Lombardi was fired.

Jim Bob Cooter was named the quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions at the beginning of 2014 as Jim Caldwell replaced Jim Schwartz as head coach.

Now, with the Lions at 1-6 and coming off of a 28-19 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, he has been promoted to offensive coordinator with the firing of Joe Lombardi, according to a report on GoVolsXtra.

From Fayetteville, Tenn., Cooter was a backup quarterback for Tennessee from 2003 to 2006 after coming onto campus and redshirting in 2002. He then spent time as a graduate assistant in 2007 and 2008.

Despite hardly ever appearing in football games during his college time, only seeing action in one game a year, he is now a 31-year old coordinator in the NFL. That is pretty impressive for a guy who never played at that level.

However, while this is a nice story, it’s not like Cooter does not have a bit of a sketchy past.

In 2006, he was arrested for a DUI, and in 2009 he was arrested for aggravated burglary after climbing through a window into a woman’s bedroom, stripping to his underwear, and getting into bed with her. His arrests were documented on a Detroit local news station upon his hiring.

Cooter’s checkered past makes it a bit suspicious how he could rise up the NFL ranks so quickly. But he is there now, and he joins Matt Simms, Tyler Bray, and of course, Peyton Manning as former Vol quarterbacks currently with an NFL team in some capacity.

Who would have thought that?
