Golf and lots of football news from the 2017 schedule to roster updates leads the Tennessee Volunteers news on Rocky Top for Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016.


We’re at the midweek point leading up to the third Tennessee football game of the season, and fans on Rocky Top are approaching with cautious optimism.

After all, the chance to get to face the Florida Gators while undefeated has been a thrilling prospect for a while.

But the Vols still have more work to do. They first have to get past the Ohio Bobcats. Lots of news related to last week and in preparation for this week surrounds that.

There’s also a golf update to get to.

But we start with the biggest breaking news of the day.

Vols announce 2017 football schedule – UTSports

"A Monday-night season opener and seven games at Neyland Stadium highlight the 2017 Tennessee football schedule as released Tuesday by the Southeastern Conference.The Vols play 12 games over 13 weeks in 2017, with the open date coming on Oct. 7, following the completion of Week Five."

Vols OL Jack Jones drawing praise – John Brice of 247Sports

"On Tennessee’s initial possession after it inserted Jack Jones into its offensive line, the Vols moved quickly downfield and found the end zone in Saturday’s 45-24 win against Virginia Tech.Now as the 15th-ranked Vols (2-0) prep to host Ohio (1-1) Saturday (Noon, SEC TV) inside Neyland Stadium, the sophomore offensive lineman is drawing praise from both his head coach and defensive teammates."

Derek Barnett unhappy with his Battle at Bristol performance – Knoxville News Sentinel

"Tennessee junior defensive end Derek Barnett wasn’t pleased with his performance in the Pilot Flying J Battle at Bristol on Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway.He’s looking to get better against Ohio (1-1) on Saturday (TV: Noon, SEC) inside Neyland Stadium."

Vols golf has Top 5 finish at Mercedes-Benze Championship – UTSports

"Junior Blakesly Warren paced the Volunteers at the 20th Annual Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship held at Cherokee Country Club Monday, Sept. 12 through Tuesday, Sept. 13. The Tennessee-native carded two rounds below par to finish the tournament in fourth place, marking a career-best finish (211, -2). As a team, No. 23 Tennessee finished the tournament tied for fifth place (565, +13) with Maryland after posting 289 in the final round on Tuesday."
