Tennessee football pitched its largest shutout in 13 years against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles at Neyland Stadium. The Volunteers won the game 55-0.

Joshua Dobbs was out of the game before halftime. John Kelly showed that Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara could be replaced. And Tennessee football became bowl eligible with a 55-0 homecoming victory over Tennessee Tech Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

With the win, the Vols moved to 6-3 on the year. Although they are still 2-3 in the SEC, the Florida Gators’ loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks has breathed new life into them.

They are only one game back for the SEC East championship with three games left against the Missouri Tigers, Kentucky Wildcats, and Vanderbilt Commodores.

On Saturday, the Vols had the first relaxing game they have played all year. In seven of their first eight games, they trailed by two scores at one point. In the only other game, against the Ohio Bobcats, they had only a one-score lead going into the fourth quarter.

However, on Saturday, everything came together. Tennessee built a 38-0 lead at halftime and controlled the game from start to finish.

Joshua Dobbs completed his first 11 passes to finish 12-of-13 for 183 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.

Two of those touchdown passes went to Josh Malone, who had five receptions for 112 yards. And one of those happened on the first drive.

Also, he had a touchdown pass to Jauan Jennings.

At the same time, with Hurd gone and Kamara still hurt, John Kelly had seven carries for 104 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown run.

Before the first half ended, Quinten Dormady replaced Dobbs. he finished 9-of-13 for 109 yards. Jones began to bring in backups all over the field at that point as well.

Carlin Fils-Aime had eight carries for 27 yards and two touchdowns, and Jeremy Lewis added seven carries for 38 yards.

Brandon Johnson had 64 receiving yards, while Tyler Byrd added another 37 yards. Jeff George and Marquez Callaway also each had a reception, and Callaway had a punt return for a touchdown.

In short, it was the perfect game for the Vols to use a lot of backups and give everybody some experience.

Even Aaron Medley improved his stats with two field goals, one of which was beyond 40 yards.

But the best stat for the Vols is no turnovers. That is a stat that plagued them all year, and they finally overcame it.

Coming off of a sickening loss to South Carolina last week, the Vols desperately needed a game like this. Tennessee football is still in good shape to have a great season.

But they still need a bit of help.
