Phillip Fulmer as UT athletic director, a new Volunteers secondary coach, and Rick Barnes quotes lead the Tennessee Vols news for Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2017.

Talk about a crazy weekend for the Tennessee Vols! The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday brought a huge bombshell of shocking updates.

And we have to get to all of them.

As we get set to bring you more news on Rocky Top, football is still dominating even though it’s in the offseason and basketball season is in full swing.

Of course, the women made a splash with a huge upset over Notre Dame last night. And the men have a big basketball game coming up tonight as well.

But we’ve got stories on that. Let’s get to the news about the football transition.

Phillip Fulmer emerges as leading candidate for Tennessee Vols AD – Chris Low, ESPN

In a sense of nostalgia for all UT fans, Chris Low broke this story Monday afternoon. It was a shock to many, but according to sources, Fulmer has reciprocated the interest. Vols fans everywhere would at least feel a sense of stability about Fulmer. But his abilities to handle the administrative issues are obviously up in the air.

"When contacted Monday by ESPN.com, Fulmer would not address specifically the Tennessee athletic director’s job, but he also wouldn’t rule out that he could be a candidate.“Since I was 18 years old, UT’s best interests have always been my interest,” Fulmer told ESPN.com. “I want what is best for UT. Dr. [Beverly] Davenport [UT’s newly named chancellor] has laid out a clear process, and we have to respect the time and her vision to complete that process.”"

"Warren, who turns 40 on Tuesday, agreed to a two-year contract with an annual salary of $450,000, UT officials confirmed to GoVols247.“Coach Warren is a passionate, knowledgeable and driven football coach that has an outstanding history of developing defensive backs on the collegiate level,” said Vols head coach Butch Jones. “He also has a great reputation as one of the top recruiters in the country with strong ties to our recruiting areas.”"

Rick Barnes says Vols ‘move forward, then we regress’ – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Tennessee basketball’s inconsistency is frustrating Rick Barnes, who continues to demand more from his young team. Barnes noted that they pretty much can’t handle success, which is a trademark of many young teams. However, they have chances against both Mississippi schools this week to try and do that.

"So what has Rick Barnes learned about his team after the first two weeks of conference play?“Up and down,” Barnes said on Monday, “that’s kind of where we’ve been. We’ve had our moments where we really think we’re going to move forward, then we regress, work back.”"
