Tennessee Vols Morning Report: Brady Hoke Hired, Butcher Ends Career, Hubbs Hurt, Golf

Brady Hoke joining the Tennessee Vols, Robert Hubbs III hurt, Andrew Butcher ending his career, and golf lead the Volunteers news for Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2017.

Happy Tuesday, as Tennessee Vols and Peyton Manning fans everywhere still struggle to accept Tom Brady’s incredible Super Bowl performance from Sunday.

As that happens, there’s a lot of news to get to with the athletic program.

And some of it is pretty bad.

There is another staff change, which could be one bright spot, and then there are injuries in two different sports to get to.

Meanwhile, there’s some golf news to bring you.

But let’s start the day with the biggest news that broke on Monday.

Vols preparing to add Brady Hoke as DL coach – Rhiannon Potkey, Knoxville News Sentinel

It looks like Butch Jones was preparing to replace Steve Stripling all along, and in doing so he found former Michigan Wolverines coach Brady Hoke to take over as defensive line coach. According to reports, he’s already working with the program and studying film. This serves as just further evidence that Bob Shoop wanted his own staff in there.

"Known for his defensive line coaching and recruiting abilities, Hoke was fired at Michigan in 2014 after four seasons as coach. DeBord, a sports administrator at Michigan at the time, took over the day-to-day aspects of the football program until Michigan hired Jim Harbaugh.Michigan’s defense greatly improved in Hoke’s first two seasons, going from 108th in scoring defense and 110th in yards allowed before he arrived to ranking among the top 20 in both categories. Michigan won 11 games in Hoke’s first season and he earned national coach of the year honors."

Tennessee football defensive lineman ending his career – Twitter

A four-star recruit as a member of the 2015 Tennessee Vols recruiting class, defensive end Andrew Butcher has not been able to see the field since he arrived in Knoxville due to injuries. On Monday, he announced on Twitter that he would be ending his career. Here is a part of what he said.

"“After two years with this amazing program, I have taken a medical exemption that ends my football career at UT. I have had 4 surgeries, two major on the same knee.”"

Rick Barnes says Robert Hubbs III battling injuries – Grant Ramey, GoVols 247

The drop-off in senior Robert Hubbs III’s production seems explainable now, as he appears to be playing hurt, according to Tennessee Vols basketball coach Rick Barnes. Obviously, this is bad for the Vols as he is their star player, and they need him healthy to make a run down the stretch.

"“His knees have been bothering him some,” Barnes said on Monday. “You know what, the difference in Robert Hubbs now and when I got here, (now) he tries like crazy to fight through everything. He really does.“If I ask him how he’s doing, and I know he’s not doing great, he says, ‘I’m good, coach, I’m good.’ And that’s probably the biggest change he’s made over the year. He truly wants to play and truly wants to win.”"

Vols golf in ninth place after 36 holes at Sea Best Invitational – UTSports

"Junior Lorenzo Scalise and freshman Jake Meenhorst each carded rounds under par on Monday and the Tennessee men’s golf team sits in ninth place after the first two rounds of the Ninth Annual Sea Best Invitational at Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.Scalise, Meenhorst and Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara are all in the top 25 and the Vols combined to shoot 15-over 575 through the first 36 holes. Tennessee was in seventh place after the first round at 7-over 287 and shot 8-over 288 in the second."
