Tennessee Vols Morning Report: Basketball Losses, AD Update, Softball

Recaps of two basketball losses, updates on the Tennessee Vols AD search, and softball opening lead the Volunteers news for Monday, Feb. 13, 2017.

Happy Monday to everybody in Vol Nation! We hope you’re all getting ready for the special…or stressful…Valentine’s Day this Tuesday. For the Tennessee Vols, the fans had their love interest in them soured a bit this past weekend.

That’s because of how the men and women played in their basketball outings.

We’ll get to both of those. The softball season officially began over the weekend as well, and at least there was some good news there.

Meanwhile, we have a football staff update to bring you and more news from the athletic director search.

And there’s some golf to cover.

But let’s start with the athletic director search.

It seems that the top two candidates to become the Tennessee Vols new athletic director are clearly Phillip Fulmer and UT-Chattanooga AD Dave Blackburn. For fans, it’s nostalgia vs actual performance to see who gets the position. But it seems like there’s no way they can go there together.

"While sources have indicated UT has vetted numerous candidates and likely will interview between three and five possible replacements for Hart, who has served from September 2011 through present, the top two finalists and viewed as current Chattanooga athletics director David Blackburn and former UT football player and coach and College Football Hall of Famer Phillip Fulmer.What sources have stressed to 247Sports the past week, in speaking with people on Capitol Hill in Nashville to those on Rocky Top and in Chattanooga, “there is not a scenario that works out for Blackburn to leave Chattanooga in order to be a No. 2 to Fulmer, if Fulmer lands the top post.”"

Charlton Warren focused on improving secondary discipline – Jesse Simonton, SEC Country

New Tennessee Vols defensive backs coach Charlton Warren is already going to work for the football team. After last year’s struggles down the stretch, he probably needs to, especially with the loss of Cameron Sutton.

"Tennessee’s new defensive backs coach Charlton Warren has emphasized a “clean slate” mentality after inheriting a position group that struggled mightily in 2016.The Vols finished 10th in the SEC in pass defense in 2016, with frequent issues allowing big plays (SEC-worst 24 completions of more than 30 yards) and costly penalties."

Tennessee softball opens season with 5-0 start – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols began their softball season with the Eagle Round Robin over the weekend, and they came away perfect to open the year.

"No. 15/15 Tennessee powered its way to a 13-1 victory over UNC Greensboro on Sunday to finish the Eagle Round Robin with a perfect 5-0 record. The Volunteers scored in all five innings to earn their third run-rule victory this year."

Tennessee basketball falls to Georgia 76-75 – Associated Press

Despite a 14-point lead in the second half and a chance to take full control of their NCAA Tournament chances, the Tennessee Vols fell apart at home to the Georgia Bulldogs. And it’s all because they couldn’t contain J.J. Frazier.

"Frazier scored 20 of his 29 points after halftime Saturday as Georgia erased a 14-point, second-half deficit to beat Tennessee 76-75 and snap a three-game losing streak.The comeback enabled Georgia (14-11, 5-7 SEC) to change its frustrating recent track record in road games. Georgia had lost its last four road contests by a total of 16 points, including overtime defeats at No. 17 Florida and No. 15 Kentucky."

Tennessee Lady Vols fall to Texas A&M 61-59 – Dan Fleser, Knoxville News Sentinel

Just a day after the Tennessee men blew a 14-point lead to the Georgia Bulldogs, Holly Warlick’s team was not going to get outdone. They decided they could blow an 11-point lead to the Texas A&M Aggies with under nine minutes to go, and not hit a field goal at all during that time.

"In the end, the moment that mattered most was Texas A&M center Khaalia Hillsman snagging an offensive rebound and swishing a foul lane jumper with four seconds left. The basket capped the Aggies’ stunning comeback for their 61-59 victory."

Women’s Golf completes Round One of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge – UTSports

"Seniors Emmie Pietila and Lucia Polo came back strong from injuries suffered in the fall to card Tennessee’s lowest scores in Round One of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. In the stacked field, the Volunteers finished the round in 11th place with an overall score of 298."
