Zach Azzanni leaving the Tennessee Vols, basketball losing to Vanderbilt, the Lady Vols, and baseball lead the Volunteers news on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017.

Wednesday wasn’t the best day for the Tennessee Vols. They suffered losses in multiple forums, from the loss of a staff member to a loss in a game.

As we get set to bring you the news on Rocky Top for Thursday morning, both of those losses are major stories for the morning.

There is also a preview for another game Thursday night in another sport.

However, there was at least one win on Wednesday in another sport, which we’ll get to as well. But let’s start with the unexpected loss in football.

Zach Azzanni leaving Vols for NFL – Grant Ramey, GoVols247

Tennessee football wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni is leaving the Vols to join the NFL’s Chicago Bears in the same position. Azzanni has been with Butch Jones since he arrived in Knoxville in 2012, and the two have worked together since Jones’s days at Central Michigan. Here’s what Jones said about the departure.

"“We are really excited for Zach and his family. I have known Zach for a long time and this is a path he has wanted to pursue for some time. We can’t thank him enough for his loyalty, dedication and hard work over the past four years to our football program.”"

Tennessee baseball tops Loyola Marymount 8-4 – Mike Strange, Knoxville News Sentinel

After opening the season by taking two of three in the series over the Memphis Tigers, Dave Serrano’s team move to 3-1 on the year with a midweek win on Wednesday. But the game was a bit tougher than it probably should have been.

"Reggie Southall and Jeff Moberg delivered the go-ahead runs and freshman Garrett Stallings came out of the bullpen to protect a lead Wednesday night as Tennessee beat Loyola Marymount, 8-4, in Los Angeles.Tennessee (3-1) broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by  Southall, a graduate transfer from Southern Cal, followed by Moberg’s two-run double."

Lady Vols set to face the Florida Gators Thursday night – UTSports

Diamond DeShields’s status is still in question, but the Tennessee Lady Vols still have work to do. Holly Warlick’s team, at 17-10 and 8-6 in the SEC with a No. 22 RPI ranking, is set to host the Florida Gators Thursday night for the second to last game of the year. They beat Florida earlier in the season, so they’ll be looking for a regular season sweep Thursday.

"Tennessee women’s basketball coach Holly Warlick and seniors Schaquilla Nunn and Jordan Reynolds met with the media Wednesday, as the Lady Vols prepare for Florida on Thursday. The game tips off at 7 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on SEC Network and online through WatchESPN.Tennessee (17-10, 8-6 SEC) plays host to its final home game of the regular season, as the Gators (13-14, 4-10 SEC) come to Thompson-Boling Arena for Senior Night and the 54th meeting in the series."

Tennessee basketball falls at home to Vanderbilt – Patrick Murray, WBIR

With the NCAA Tournament pretty much on the line, Rick Barnes’s Tennessee Vols suffered a terrible home loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores, making their path to the Big Dance much more difficult. The loss was by 11 points to a team they beat by double digits on the road earlier in the year.

"Vanderbilt’s defense stifled the Vols in a 67-54 Commodores win at Thompson-Boling Arena on Wednesday night.Tennessee’s offense was abysmal in the first half, shooting 6-of-26 (23%) from the floor en route to a 28-18 deficit.“I am mystified by it. This time of year you can’t come out at home playing like that and I have been doing this a long time, but I don’t have all of the answers because that surprises me,” Vols head coach Rick Barnes said."
