Tennessee Vols quarterback Jarrett Guarantano and track and field star Christian Coleman lead the Volunteers news for Wednesday, March 15, 2017.

Well the mid-March bitter cold that swept the Eastern half of the country on Tuesday and into Wednesday ended up affecting the Tennessee Vols.

It’s a bit hard to talk about the spring related to the school when winter has decided to come at last. But there’s still lots of news to get to.

As we get set to bring you the updates on Rocky Top for the day after Pi Day, the rescheduling of baseball and softball games due to the weather are obviously big news.

But football still leads the stories of the day, and this time, track and field is surprisingly relevant as well.

Let’s begin with the football news.

Jarrett Guarantano spending spring break with QB guru – Wes Rucker, GoVols247

Looks like Jarrett Guarantano is not missing any opportunity. The redshirt freshman quarterback, who is a major candidate to become the Tennessee Vols starter this year, is spending spring break on the west coast working with George Whitfield.

"The dynamic New Jersey native wants to take the starting spot Dobbs left in his wake, and he’s going the extra mile one week before the start of a crucial spring camp in Knoxville to boost those efforts.Whitfield told Rhiannon Potkey of The Knoxville News Sentinel that Guarantano is humble about the challenge ahead of him but confident in his changes of seizing that opportunity.“He doesn’t talk about having that spot. He just says he knows he has to go to work,” Whitfield told the KNS. “For a kid that has grown up with a lot of self-confidence, he has been very humble about what is coming around the corner. It’s good to hear he is taking that ground-level approach to this shuffle.”"

Christian Coleman named Men’s National Track Athlete of the Year – USTFCCCA Online

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their National Athletes of the Year for the 2017 NCAA Division I Track and Field season. They named the Tennessee Vols’ Christian Coleman Men’s National Track Athlete of the Year.

"Coleman put an exclamation point on his fine indoor season this past weekend at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. The junior from Atlanta, Georgia won the 60 and 200 to become the first man to sweep the short sprint titles since Justin Gatlin in 2002."

Tennessee baseball game vs MTSU postponed – Phil Kaplan, Knoxville News Sentinel

Dave Serrano’s team will have to wait a bit to continue its red-hot streak as the bitter cold weather resulted in the Vols rescheduling a Tuesday game they had.

"No makeup date was announced. The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, but was moved up to 5 o’clock in an attempt to play on Tuesday."

Tennessee softball game vs Auburn cancelled – UTSports

Just like the baseball team, the softball team had to cancel a midweek SEC game against the Auburn Tigers due to severely cold weather. Unlike he baseball team, this game was canceled, not postponed.

"The Vols will be back in action this Friday-Sunday when they travel to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas in a three-game series."
