Cuonzo Martin’s new job, Tennessee Vols in Todd McShay’s NFL Mock Draft, and Jarrett Guarantano lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, March 16, 2017.

Spring inches closer, and the weather keeps getting colder. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Vols are about to be in the midst of a lot of huge events.

And that makes for heavy mid-March news days.

Spring practice approaching, the Lady Vols in the NCAA Tournament, and baseball and softball are all in swing.

Today’s news on Rocky Top involves a coaching change involving a former Vol, another preview for next month’s NFL Draft, and one of Tennessee football’s quarterbacks. There’s also a baseball recap to get to.

But let’s start with the former coach.

Cuonzo Martin Named Mizzou Coach – Dave Matter & Ben Frederickson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Cuonzo Martin bolted the Tennessee Vols after three years as head coach and taking them to the Sweet Sixteen in 2014. He then spent three years with the Cal Golden Bears and went to one NCAA Tournament. Now, he’s back in the SEC, having taken over the Missouri Tigers as head coach.

"Martin, a native of East St. Louis, has been a head coach at three Division I programs, spending the last three seasons at the University of California-Berkeley. Official terms of his contract were not released, though it’s expected to be a seven-year deal worth a reported $21 million, which would make him the highest-paid basketball coach in team history."

Todd McShay has two Vols in first round of latest Mock Draft – Kevin Ryan, GoVols247

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay continues to give love to the Tennessee Vols in this year’s NFL Draft. And his latest mock draft projects two Vols to go in the first round, more than the total number of Vols who went in each of the past two NFL Drafts overall.

"It’s no surprise that he has UT defensive lineman Derek Barnett being chosen early, but running back Alvin Kamara is now in the first round after his performance at the NFL Scouting Combine.McShay has Barnett coming off the board at No. 11 overall to the New Orleans Saints, and he projects Kamara to the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 27."

George Whitfield praises Jarrett Guarantano – Austin Price, Volquest

Jarrett Guarantano is spending Spring Break working with quarterback guru George Whitfield in San Diego, Calif. And according to a Volquest article, he had quite a few good things to say about Guarantano. Here is a quote from him that’s in the story.

"“One of the biggest arms in college football,” Whitfield said. “I don’t think people really understand and they won’t know what is coming when they see it this fall. He can get in there and win the job. When he gets out on the field, every man here has been watching. It’s like every time he sets up to throw, even the other quarterbacks want to look over and make sure they didn’t miss it. He is the prototype of what you want going into the SEC.”"

Tennessee baseball destroys Austin Peay 18-4 – UTSports

Dave Serrano’s team returned to the field Wednesday to dominate the Austin Peay Governors 18-4. The Vols have been red-hot since the start of the season, and they continued it with their play in this game.

"Brodie Leftridge and Pete Derkay hit home runs, nine Tennessee pitchers took the mound and the No. 24 Vols roared back with 18 unanswered runs to take an 18-4 victory over Austin Peay on Wednesday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.Down by three runs after the fourth inning, Tennessee (12-2) battled back with six runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-4 lead over Austin Peay (9-7).
