Butch Jones on Tennessee Vols leaders, praise for qb coach Mike Canales, and a softball milestone lead the Volunteers news for Thursday, March 23, 2017.

It’s Thursday, and the Tennessee Vols will hold their second spring practice for football today. There’s already a lot of news surrounding the program as it is.

As we bring you the news on Rocky Top, we address some of the key updates from that program.

But we still also have some spring sports to bring you, and it was a good day for the Vols in that regard on Wednesday night.

However, as always, we start with football.

He’s only had one spring practice so far, but Butch Jones already has a solid idea of guys stepping up to lead the program this Fall. He named Jashon Robertson, Darrin Kirkland Jr., John Kelly, and Kahlil McKenzie among others as potential leaders.

"The Vols will take the field for the second of their 15 spring practices today, and the head coach will be looking for more of what he saw in Tuesday’s opening practice.“These players are trying to lead in their own way,” Coach Butch Jones said Tuesday after practice. “It starts with the senior class.”"

They call him ‘Coach Chico,’ and he’s receiving lots of praise from the guys he is coaching. New qb coach Mike Canales is one of the primary guys responsible for overseeing the quarterback battle this year, and Jarrett Guarantano and Quinten Dormady have only spoken highly of him.

"Mike Canales, Tennessee’s new quarterbacks coach, is the one responsible for watching every move within his wide-open position group, in which Guarantano and junior Quinten Dormady are competing for the starting job.He may be the reason for Guarantano’s eye-popping confidence, too, leading the redshirt freshman to predict SEC titles after the first day of spring camp."
