Tennessee football head coach Butch Jones gave his own comments on the Volunteers hiring Phillip Fulmer back into the athletic department.

Joe DiPietro, John Currie, and Phillip Fulmer himself commented on the former Tennessee football coach’s return back to the Vols. But on Wednesday, it was Butch Jones’s turn to give his take.

And that’s exactly what he did.

Speaking with SEC Country, Jones said everything you would expect him to say about the move. He used words like mentor and friend to describe Fulmer, and to be fair, Fulmer also said they had a friendship the day before.

Here’s just one quote from Jones in the article about the situation.

"“To have a guy involved with our University of Tennessee system like Coach Fulmer, a guy of that stature, a College Football Hall of Famer, helps everyone,” Jones said. “Coach understands everything Tennessee is all about.”"

Tennessee hired Fulmer as special adviser to the president. The hire was a big unity move after the tension that arose with the decision to hire John Currie as athletic director earlier in the year.

Currie is a mixed bag with his reputation in Knoxville, and there were major rumors of tension between him and Fulmer.

After all, Currie was a member of the athletic department when it ran Fulmer off back in 2008. So you could see the tension.

Fulmer is a legend and a hall of fame coach. But as of right now, Jones is a bigger deal in the program. After all, the Tennessee football head coach is always the most important figure in the Vols’ athletic department.

So Jones’s comments on the situation do matter. But given what we know about Jones and his relationship with Fulmer, it was clear he’d endorse the move.

And that’s exactly what he did.
