Phillip Fulmer’s new role with the Tennessee Vols and Evan Berry’s preseason recognition lead the Volunteers news for Wednesday, June 21, 2017.

Happy Summer Solstice! On this longest day of the year, there is some brightness shining over the Tennessee Vols program.

That’s reflected in the news we’re set to bring you on Rocky Top for today.

A living legend’s return to UT is obviously our lead story. But there’s also preseason recognition for one football player.

And at the same time, quite a few track Vols give Big Orange Country something to be excited about. Let’s start with the legend, though.

Phillip Fulmer takes new role with Tennessee Vols Troy Provost-Heron, Knoxville News Sentinel

Former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer has returned to the school. He took on a role as special adviser to UT president on Tuesday, and in his press conference, he immediately worked to stress unity with the program.

"As he was introduced Tuesday as a special adviser to University of Tennessee President Joe DiPietro for community, athletics and university relations, the former UT football coach stated that there was “absolutely no animosity” between himself, the university and John Currie for not being named athletic director back in February."

Evan Berry named Athlon Preseason All-American – Blake Morgan, SEC Country

He suffered a season ending injury last year, but Athlon is still giving Evan Berry recognition. Berry was named second-team preseason All-American by the magazine as a kick returner for 2017. Given his play the last three years at the position, it’s definitely warranted.

"The senior defensive back played in nine games for the Vols last season and returned 14 kickoffs for 460 yards and one touchdown, tied for first in the SEC. His average of 32.9 yards per return was second in the country."

10 Vols to compete at USATF Championship – UTSports

The Tennessee Vols track and field program continues to get national recognition. After the impressive run by Christian Coleman this past season, there will now be 10 current and former Vols to compete in 13 events at the USATF Championships in Sacramento. Vol legends Coleman and Justin Gatlin are among those attending.

"The Vols will bring five Olympians who have won a combined 10 Olympic medals and appeared in eight Olympic games to the Championships. The 10 #VFLs will look to be among the top three finishers in their event as they attempt to lock up a spot on Team USA for the 2017 World Championships. The World Championships will be held August 5-13 in London, England."
