Tennessee basketball newcomer James Daniel and junior forward Admiral Schofield are making headlines for the Volunteers in the middle of the summer.

With nearly its entire team back and key recruiting pieces to offset the losses, Rick Barnes has to be looking forward to coaching his best Tennessee basketball team yet later this year.

And in the midst of summer, two of his guys are starting to emerge.

Admiral Schofield, who has been with the Vols since Barnes arrived, appears to have emerged as a leader for the team.

According to an article by Wes Rucker of GoVols247, freshman forward Derrick Walker said that about the junior forward.

With the Pilot Rocky Top League currently going on, Schofield already has his chance to seize the moment.

And considering Grant Williams took his thunder as the star post player last year, it looks like Schofield is committed to gaining his respect back.

Meanwhile, a Tennessee basketball newcomer is also making news.

According to an article by Mike Strange in the Knoxville News Sentinel, Tennessee basketball assistant coach Mike Schwartz praised James Daniel III’s leadership. Here’s a bit of what he said.

"“He’s still recovering,” Schwartz said. “But his maturity and the way he is vocally with our guys, even being here only few weeks, has been impressive.”"

Daniel is dealing with an injury right now, which has been keeping him out of the Pilot Rocky Top League.

A transfer from Howard, the 6’0″ 175-pound guard is a fifth year whom the Vols brought in for veteran leadership and scoring abilities.

So it’s good news for the men’s Tennessee basketball program to hear he’s already taking a leadership role.

Now, he just has to fully get healthy. Two years removed from being the leading scorer in the nation, Daniel suffered an injury his senior year with Howard and is still trying to recover.

If he can get back to his old self, that’s just another weapon in the backcourt for the Vols.
