Former Tennessee Volunteers running back Alvin Kamara is practicing in a similar role with New Orleans in the NFL to what he did in college.

When Butch Jones secured a commitment from Alvin Kamara to the Tennessee football program back in 2015, it was clear he wanted to use the speedy back in multiple ways.

And that’s exactly what he did.

In two years with the Vols, Kamara averaged over six yards a carry with 1,294 yards overall and 16 touchdowns on the ground. But he also caught 74 passes for 683 yards and seven touchdowns, and he returned 26 punts for 284 yards and a touchdown.

Now, in the NFL, the Saints appear to be looking to use Kamara in a similar role.

Mike Triplett of ESPN had an article about Kamara catching on in his role as a hybrid.

Of course, this is not much of a shock to anybody. The Saints have a history with Sean Payton and Drew Brees of using speedy all-purpose backs as hybrids of running backs and receivers. That’s exactly what Reggie Bush and Darren Sproles were.

And they have been searching for another one. In fact, it could be the key to helping them get back to the playoffs.

That’s why Kamara was a huge pickup for them.

On top of that, with Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram on the roster, the Saints wouldn’t pick Kamara so high unless they planned to use him in that role.

And now, seeing as how he’s getting action as a running back and a receiver, it seems pretty clear that this franchise wants to use him the same way the Vols did.

Considering how dangerous he was with Tennessee football, Alvin Kamara could thrive in that role in the NFL.

Watch out for him to make an impact immediately, something he definitely has the potential to do.
