Other Backup Quarterbacks

Sheriron Jones, Freshman (Moreno Valley, Calif.)

Sheriron Jones is a dual-threat quarterback out of California who will begin practicing with the team full-time once August comes around. He has already worked with the team at different points and impressed people who have viewed him.

Butch Jones made a point earlier in the year to hint that Jones will certainly battle Dormady for the backup job, and given that his style is more similar to Dobbs, there is a reason to believe that he could take it. But it’s hard to imagine him surpassing Dormady after all the praise Dormady received during the offseason. So he’ll likely be the third-stringer at the position.

Jauan Jenning, Freshman (Murfreesboro, Tenn.)

Jauan Jennings is a Tennessee boy, which should have given him the inside track to climb up the ladder among the freshman quarterbacks who arrived on campus. But, without outright saying it, the coaching staff made it very clear that Jennings was outperformed by Dormady in the spring.

On top of that, Sheriron Jones has already raised expectations without taking a snap in an official practice, and Jennings is now battling off-the-field legal issues from an earlier incident. All of those things point to him falling down the depth chart. It’s likely after this year he will switch positions or transfer. But he is not going to be seeing the field as a quarterback unless a slew of injuries hit.
