8. 1996: Tennessee Wins 20-13

In this game, Alabama had come into Knoxville undefeated and in the Top 10, while the Vols had felt like there was nothing to play for after a loss to Florida earlier in the year.

But at the same time, Phillip Fulmer let the team know that winning two straight over the Tide meant something to everybody in Knoxville. And this would be a huge opportunity for the Vols to do just that.

It did not seem like it would happen.

Alabama sold out to stop the run all day against Jay Graham, and it would be up to Peyton Manning to win the game with the team down 13-0 in the second half.

Manning connected with Joey Kent for the first touchdown of the game to cut the lead to 13-6. The Vols then got a stop on defense, and Manning drove down the field again.

This time, though, Graham got something going as he pounded in for a short-yardage touchdown to tie the game at 13.

  • And after another stop, Graham finally got his big play. In what seemed like an exact replica of his 75-yard run the year before to clinch the Vols’ first win over the Tide in 10 years at the time, Graham broke the tie with an 80-yard run to give the Vols a 20-13 lead.

But Alabama had one final chance. The Tide drove deep into Tennessee territory, and they looked like they would tie it.

But Leonard Little came through, got a sack, and forced a fumble. Ballgame. The Vols held on for their second straight win in the series 20-13.
