5. 1967: Tennessee Wins 24-13

This is one of the most thrilling victories in history for the Vols because of what it had decided. Tennessee had not beaten Alabama in seven years at the time, as Bear Bryant had elevated the Tide to a level above Tennessee by winning the national title in 1961, 1964, and 1965 while having an undefeated season in 1966 and two other Top 10 finishes in 1962 and 1963.

Going into 1967, the Tide had a hiccup with a 37-37 tie against the Florida State Seminoles, but three straight wins had put them back on track. And ranked No. 6 in the country, they hosted the No. 7 ranked Vols in Birmingham.

The game itself may not have been exciting, but the thrill of the victory certainly was.

Tennessee took the lead first 7-0, but Kenny Stabler tied it up with a touchdown run of his own. Tied 7-7 going into the second half,  the Vols took a 14-7 lead in the second half, which would be all they needed.

A 41-yard field goal gave the Vols a 17-7 lead, and Alabama cut it to 17-13 after a touchdown and then a failed two-point conversion.

But the Vols still had complete control of the game and scored another touchdown to clinch the 24-13 victory over the Tide. The win was huge for Tennessee, as it secured an SEC Championship for them in Doug Dickey’s fourth year as head coach and retroactively a national championship.

Meanwhile, Alabama finished 8-2-1, and the difference between the two schools for the championship was this game.
