As 21 new recruits are integrated into Tennessee football, it’s time for the Volunteers to look ahead. Here are 15 early 2017 recruiting targets.
The Top 15 National Signing Day class was exactly what Butch Jones and the Tennessee Vols needed going into the 2016 season with already a ton of talent returning.
But while this class was about quality and addressing specific needs with only 21 signees, 2017 is a different story.
Tennessee loses nine seniors expected to contribute this year, and there are quite a few juniors who could potentially leave early for the NFL as well, including Derek Barnett, Jalen Hurd, and Alvin Kamara.
At least 22 players returning from last year and expected to contribute this year will be gone permanently after 2017.
That means that next year’s recruiting class is once again going to be about stacking the roster with a ton of talent. The 2017 class will be full of players who could contribute immediately at certain positions, not the least of which is the quarterback position.
So with recruiting for 2016 in the books and spring practice right around the corner, recruiting for 2017 has already begun, just as it always does.
Butch Jones did not run from the importance of recruiting when he took over the program, and almost every decision he has made since then off the field has been made with recruiting in mind. That includes staff hires and how he sells the program.
With all that in mind, here are 15 early Tennessee recruiting targets for 2017 that the Vols have a realistic chance at.
