Tennessee football vs. Vanderbilt: Five Vols to watch for against Commodores
In their three wins on the season, the Vanderbilt Commodores have sacked the quarterback 12 times. They only have one interception in those games, but they do have five on the season. And their three losing opponents were 17-of-32 for 280 yards, 13-of-26 for 140 yards and five-of-12 for 50 yards.
Despite the way he has come on strong for Tennessee football recently, Jarrett Guarantano could always be in danger of falling back into his funk. And Vandy has gotten better in their wins at shutting down quarterbacks. As a result, Guarantano’s play is going to be key for the Vols if they are going to win this game.
Derek Mason has a tendency, for all of his flaws, to make sure he gets the best of timid quarterbacks every now and then. Guarantano could certainly fall into that category. As a result, he needs to make sure he’s ready to go, and Jim Chaney needs to make sure he calls the right plays to put him in position to win.
Of course, pass protection, a solid running game and solid play from his receivers, which he has gotten recently, are all key as well. But the main thing is for him to make the right decisions and for him to make them on time, as he could be vulnerable against a team that can get a lot of sacks.
