Tennessee Volunteers at South Carolina Gamecocks

45. 839. Final/OT. 42. 850

It was the breakout game for Joshua Dobbs. To give you some context, Tennessee football had started Butch Jones’s second year at 3-4, and then Justin Worley suffered a second straight season-ending injury. So Nathan Peterman got the start against the Alabama Crimson Tide, and after falling behind 27-0, Dobbs got the nod.

Dobbs played horrible the previous year, as he filled in for Worley and lost four straight. But the Alabama game showed his improvement, as he brought them back to only lose 34-20 and earned the start the next week in this game.

A massive shootout was defined by the final minutes. The two teams traded touchdowns until midway through the third quarter, when South Carolina went up 35-21. They then went up 42-28 with less than five minutes to go.

That’s when Dobbs came alive. He led a 10-play 75-yard touchdown drive, and then the Vols got a stop. With barely over a minute to go, Dobbs led an 85-yard scoring drive to tie it up. It was an incredible performance.

Following an Aaron Medley field goal to put UT up 45-42 in overtime, Derek Barnett, who also broke out in this  game, got a key sack to knock S.C. out of field goal range. As a result, they failed on their overtime, and UT secured a huge comeback win that turned around the season.

Barnett had three sacks in the game. Dobbs, meanwhile, had 301 passing yards, 166 rushing yards and five total touchdowns. These two would carry Jones for the next two and a half years. This game started it all, and they turned it into a red-hot streak to go from 3-5 to 7-6 after a bowl game win.
