News of Tennessee Vols punter Joe Doyle entering the transfer portal leads our Volunteers news on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020.

Midway through the first full week of January, the Tennessee Vols football team continues to make news while basketball season is truly beginning to pick up. On Tuesday, the men’s basketball news was good while the football news was a bit disappointing for UT fans.

Our morning update on Rocky Top leads with the football news, and it involves one special teams player entering the transfer portal. This is something we maybe could have expected, but it still could end up being a blow in the long run.

In addition to that, we continue with our recap of a big men’s basketball win. Meanwhile, there are national honors for a couple of members of the baseball program. So we still have quite a bit to cover. Let’s start with the football news.

Vol punter Joe Doyle enters transfer portal – Patrick Brown, GoVols247

After starting the entire year in 2018 and then splitting duties with Paxton Brooks as a redshirt sophomore in 2019, Tennessee Vols sophomore punter Joe Doyle has decided to enter the transfer portal. Doyle addressed his decision in a note on Twitter Tuesday night. Here’s a bit of what he said.

"“This was a difficult decision, considering that I was born and raised in Knoxville. As most of you know, being a Tennessee Vol has always been a dream of mind. I want to say thank you Vol Nation, my coaches and my teammates for your support in making this dream a reality.”"

Amidst a two-game losing streak and four losses in five games, the Tennessee Vols men’s basketball team finally got a win without Lamonte Turner Tuesday night. They moved to 1-1 in the SEC and 9-5 overall with a 69-59 win over the Missouri Tigers, who fell to 8-6 and 1-1. Cuonzo Martin and Rick Barnes both spoke afterward. Here’s a bit of what Barnes said.

"“We’re learning. We’ve got a lot of guys out there, and it’s going to be neat, just seeing how much we can grow with this group.”"

Jordan Bowden recaps Mizzou game – SECSports.com

A notable part of Tennessee basketball beating the Missouri Tigers was Jordan Bowden. He had been in a slump but hit double-figures again in this one with a couple of three-pointers. Here’s a bit of what he said on the SEC Network.

"“We were prepared. Coach (Kim) English did a great job with the scout, and we came out here and tried to execute our game plan, and we did that.”"

Baseball Vols earn preseason All-American honors – PerfectGame.org

Two Tennessee Vols baseball players earned recognition as members of Perfect Game’s Preseason All-America teams. Junior outfielder Alerick Soularie and junior pitcher Garrett Crochet both earned their way onto the third-team.

"The Perfect Game/Rawlings Preseason All-American teams consist of 17 players each, with three full teams listed below, including detailed reports on all of the players listed on the first team. The players are selected based on a balance of past performance, 2020 expectations and their prospective talent relative to the MLB Draft."
