5. At Florida Gators

Tennessee wins 78-50

Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020

This wasn’t much of a quality victory, but the Florida Gators were one of four SEC teams who did not finish below .500 on the year that the Tennessee Lady Vols actually beat. To be fair, Florida finished 15-15, but the dominance by Kellie Harper’s team in this one on the road was enough to put this game in the top five on our list.

Heading into the game, Rocky Top had won five of six, and they were 13-3 at the time and 3-1 in the SEC. As a result, morale was still high within the program and where it was heading under Harper, and this was supposed to be another solid road test. After all, at the time, Florida was 11-6 and 2-2 in SEC play. Well, UT didn’t face much of a test.

Harper’s team took control of the game in the first quarter with an 8-0 run to go into the second quarter up 17-9. Into the second quarter, they made it a 19-3 run to go up 28-11, and they dominated the whole way. By the end, they had secured a 28-point victory on the road, and outside of the first three minutes, they were never really threatened.

Rennia Davis led the way with 18 points, and Rae Burrell came in second with 11 points off the bench. Nobody else scored double digits, but six other players scored between five and 10 points, and the defense was dominant as a whole. Florida only shot 33.3 percent from the field. So defense, team ball and leadership made for a dominant SEC win here.
