5. Starting quarterback for the Vols

A part of the turnover story for Tennessee football quarterbacks will depend on who actually starts on Saturday. Jarrett Guarantano got all the heat for those losses to the Georgia Bulldogs and the Kentucky Wildcats, but what happened against the Arkansas Razorbacks was not his fault. UT fell behind after he was knocked out of the game with a head injury.

Brian Maurer came in and did not earn one first down on four drives. The Vols’ only first down that whole time was off a holding penalty. J.T. Shrout, as we mentioned on the previous slide, threw an interception on the only drive he has played in all year.

Then there’s Harrison Bailey. He was the five-star phenom coming out of high school and helped move the Vols down the field on their final two offensive drives against the Hogs, but he barely did anything, throwing one pass on his first drive and making a lot of check-down passes down two scores late on the final drive.

Still, this is all a big question and could have a huge impact on Saturday’s game. Guarantano did have over 300 yards at the Auburn Tigers two years ago. Will he get the chance to do it again? Is he even healthy enough to do it again? We’ll find out Saturday.
