Tennessee football: Five Vols to watch for vs. TTU
6’2″ 203 pounds; Hometown: Nashville, Tenn.
At this point, we have Theo Jackson on the list simply due to the fact that he’s Tennessee football’s most valuable player on the field. Jackson is making the most of his first opportunity, after four years as a utility player in the secondary, to be a full-time starter at nickel. The past two weeks have made that abundantly clear.
After coming away with two and a half tackles for a loss, three pass deflections and 11 tackles, six of which were solo, in the Vols’ opener against BGSU, Jackson responded with two tackles for a loss, a sack, another pass deflection and 11 tackles once again, seven of which were solo, against Pitt. Simply put, he remained the star.
Now, there have been no interceptions yet, but TTU has thrown four on the year. UT is due for one, and when you take that into account combined with Jackson’s ability as the top playmaker, he’s destined to make some huge plays early.
A lot of things went wrong in Tennessee football’s secondary over the weekend, and Jackson wasn’t perfect. However, they want to put Saturday’s game away early. To do that, a couple of big plays will be key, particularly on defense, and Jackson has shown he’s most capable of that.
