Last week: Defeated Troy Trojans 23-14

We’re out of the teams with losing records in our SEC Power Rankings. However, we haven’t yet gotten to the teams that have actually beaten Power Five teams this year. In its first season under Shane Beamer, South Carolina has three hideous wins.

This past weekend, the Gamecocks were clinging to a 17-14 lead in the third quarter at one point, and they only won 23-14, against the Troy Trojans. Their last win was a 20-17 squeaker against the East Carolina Pirates. Those are the two FBS teams they have beaten.

To be fair, their two losses are to two undefeated teams, Kentucky and Georgia, and they gave Kentucky a fight, but every team has given Kentucky a fight. Struggling with ECU and Troy are more alarming, and Beamer’s team is making every game ugly. Still, they’re above .500 now, so they have a chance to make a splash going forward.

It starts this weekend with a key matchup at Tennessee football. Vanderbilt and Missouri are still on the schedule, and both are at home, but Texas A&M, Florida, the Auburn Tigers and the Clemson Tigers are also on the slate. As a result, USC has to win this Saturday’s game for a shot at a bowl in Beamer’s first year. If they do, they’ll move up these rankings.
