Again, it’s impossible to know what to make of Mike Leach his first few years on any job, and Mississippi State is no different. Of course, if Tennessee football had hired him in 2018, his program would be taking off right now, so it’s still safe to say the Vols dropped the ball on that.

Anyway, Mississippi State is still rebuilding right now and trying to find consistency, but they are a couple of crazy plays away from being 5-0. Given how we’ve dropped Texas A&M in our SEC Power Rankings, MSU’s win over them wouldn’t seem like enough to vault to this spot, but they still have that impressive win over the N.C. State Wolfpack.

When you combine that with two close losses, it’s easy to see how this program could be rising the ranks of the league. There will still be more wild ups and downs going forward, but things appear to be getting better.

Now, the Bulldogs get a bye before they have a crucial showdown against Alabama in two weeks. That’ll drop them to 3-3, but they then get Vanderbilt, and don’t forget the Tennessee State Tigers are still on the list. To reach bowl eligibility, though, they have to beat either Kentucky, Arkansas, Auburn or Ole Miss, all of whom are still on this schedule.
