Tennessee football climbs Week 5 SEC Power Rankings after dominant win over Missouri
Last week: Lost to Auburn Tigers 24-19
Ed Orgeron is in trouble. Losing to the UCLA Bruins was bad enough, but he seemed to be turning a corner after that. LSU needed to beat Auburn this past weekend before looking ahead to a brutal road, one we’ll get to in a little while.
Instead, the Tigers suffered a heartbreaker. Their win over Mississippi State looks better this week, which was enough to keep us from dropping them in our SEC Power Rankings, but they now have an ugly win and two tough losses. Looking impressive against the Central Michigan Chippewas along with Mississippi State isn’t enough to overcome that.
You could make a case that LSU and MSU belong below Tennessee football. For now, though, we’re keeping them here, as they didn’t suffer a bad loss by any stretch of the imagination. It was just one they couldn’t afford with the upcoming schedule.
Saturday marks the start of five straight games against teams currently ranked in the top 20: Kentucky, Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama and Arkansas. Texas A&M is still on the slate as well, so 4-8 is on the table, as is falling to 3-7. That’s just something Orgeron can’t afford, so LSU has to start figuring out ways to win, but Orgeron does that well when he’s under pressure.
