Tennessee football climbs Week 5 SEC Power Rankings after dominant win over Missouri
Last week: Lost to Kentucky Wildcats 20-13
There’s clearly a hangover with Tennessee football, and Florida joined the previous three teams the Vols played in losing the next week. Just like Pitt, they lost to a team they were expected to beat, but to be fair, it wasn’t a bad team.
Dan Mullen’s program simply proved it’s still not yet among the top tiers of the SEC. Recruiting was always the concern with Mullen, and that seems to be showing now, as it’s why his team may be able to hang with Alabama but is still prone to losing to teams like Kentucky. Like Texas A&M, Florida has lost out on all of its goals less than halfway into the season.
In the process, the Gators are now in the middle of the pack of our SEC Power Rankings. They are still the best two-loss team on this list, but they won’t be able to take that next step this year, which was their goal. It looks like beating Tennessee football might be their peak.
There’s a chance for them to get back on track Saturday as they face Vanderbilt, but then they’ve got a tough test at LSU. Then there’s a bye, and they come back with the one thing they have left to play for, which is being Georgia’s spoiler. South Carolina the Samford Bulldogs, Missouri and the Florida State Seminoles guarantee eight wins with Vandy, so LSU and Georgia will define the year.
