Is the Red River Shootout back? Tennessee football head coach Josh Heupel’s former team from his playing days will be playing in its biggest game of the year at the Cotton Bowl against its bitter rival, and there’s a lot at stake here. Not only are there huge Big 12 Championship implications, but the College Football Playoff could also come into play for these two future SEC teams.

The No. 21 ranked Texas Longhorns have rebounded so far from a loss to the Arkansas Razorbacks. In his first year, Steve Sarkisian has this offense rolling, as it’s scored 32 points in every win this year, including 58 against the Rice Owls and 70 against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. After a solid win against the TCU Horned Frogs, a win here could put them back in the playoff race.

On the other side, the No. 6 ranked Oklahoma Sooners have looked hideous in every FBS win this year. None have been by more than two scores. However, this team is still undefeated and in the top 10, so it’s got everything to play for going forward.

Prediction

Can you really just turn it on against a good team like Texas after squeaking by every game? My bet is no. Oklahoma is better, but their rust is working against them. As a result, I’m going with the upset here in a shootout. Texas wins, but they’ll at least cover, and this game hits the over.

Texas: 38 Oklahoma: 35
