Tennessee football stock report after 45-20 win vs. South Carolina
Stocks up
Passing game
This one is pretty obvious. Hendon Hooker threw for three touchdowns in the first quarter of Tennessee football’s win last Saturday, and he’s been probably the most efficient quarterback in the SEC over the past two weeks. It’s pretty hard to overstate how efficient he’s been.
At the same time, Hooker had a lot of help from his receivers. Velus Jones Jr. has emerged as a superstar and an elite go-to target. JaVonta Payton has a touchdown in four straight games. Cedric Tillman is a reliable wideout, and Jalin Hyatt finally emerged. This unit is only getting better, and South Carolina had an elite pass defense, so watch out.
Secondary
Jaylen McCollough had an interception last weekend. Alontae Taylor was the highest graded player in the game. Warren Burrell was one of the four highest graded defenders. Trevon Flowers was second on the team in overall tackles with nine and solo tackles with six.
Then there was Brandon Turnage. Starting in place of injured nickel Theo Jackson, Turnage earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week with 14 tackles, seven of which were solo, and two tackles for a loss. UT’s rush defense was the story early on, but the pass defense has become a much bigger story recently, and this secondary has proven deep and, quite honestly, pretty good.
