Kicking
Last week, Chase McGrath hit his only field goal and all six extra points. Don’t look now, but he hasn’t missed an extra point on the year, and he only has one missed field goal while being automatic inside 40 and hitting two from outside 40. Toby Wilson has been elite on kickoffs as well, although that’s not as important.
Paxton Brooks hit par over the weekend, having an epic 52-yarder and then a shanked 24-yarder. However, Brooks didn’t punt the week before, so he was also a bit rusty. There’s a chance he doesn’t punt Saturday against the Ole Miss Rebels, but if he does, he should be even better.
Defensive tackles
Matthew Butler had a sack, and Omari Thomas and Da’Jon Terry were two of the three highest-graded players on defense Saturday, per PFF, who weren’t defensive backs, according to Rocky Top Insider. It’s safe to say the Vols are developing a rotation here.
Those two along with Kurott Garland make for a solid rotation, and while Aubrey Solomon’s play has been surprisingly limited, he’s still part of that group. Then there’s LaTrell Bumphus, and Elijah Simmons should be healthy again Saturday. Altogether, the group slightly underperformed this past weekend, but with everybody at full strength, it’s still a plus, and that should show soon.
