Tennessee football: Checker Neyland, black jerseys and how Vols should schedule their gimmicks
4. Orange jersey with orange pants – Homecoming
You could maybe save this for when Tennessee football plays a team like the Pittsburgh Panthers from this year as a nod to Johnny Majors, but that won’t happen often. Instead, the Vols should save the all orange for their homecoming matchups.
Generally, homecoming is a forgettable game because you want it to be a game you know your team will win. This year is an exception, as the Vols randomly decided to pick the Georgia Bulldogs as their homecoming game. That’s similar to 2002, when the Miami Hurricanes were their homecoming foe, and they lost 26-3.
That may be why Pitt was a good game to use it in 2021. Usually, though, homecoming is against a team the Vols should easily beat. This uniform combination should be for that game because, well, it’s honestly the ugliest uniform combination UT has. The all orange is just a bit too much.
It’s nice as a throwback without being a retro jersey, which is why it fits for homecoming, but it shouldn’t be promoted that much. A noon game is the best time to do this one. You could switch out homecoming for the one game the Vols play against an FCS opponent each year, but it should fall on one of those games.
