As the best coach in history gets set to face the quirkiest coach in history, we might be looking at a couple of more evenly matched teams than we initially expected. After all, lots of things about this matchup favors a close game coming at Davis Wade Stadium.

We start with Alabama. Nick Saban’s team suffered a heartbreaking loss last week to Texas A&M, a game that shocked everybody. It’s not the first time Saban has been shocked in the regular season, even against A&M, since he’s been the Tide’s head coach. However, now his team, ranked No. 5 in both polls, can’t afford another loss if they want to win the West or reach the playoff.

One week before beating Alabama, though, A&M lost to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, all the more reason to wish Mike Leach was with Tennessee football. Leach is the most inconsistent coach from week to week, but he takes you on a fun ride, and coming off a bye week against a team that’s reeling, he may have just what it takes to make this a game.

Prediction

Honestly, bye weeks don’t do Leach any favors. He’s lost his last five after a Saturday off. With a young but elite quarterback in Bryce Young, Alabama will right the ship this week and dominate. Take them to cover. Saban shut out Leach last year. Expect something similar this year. MSU’s defense is solid enough, though, to get this game to hit the under.
