What the heck just happened? South Carolina was clearly a bottom-tier team in our SEC Power Rankings. We had them below Missouri but those two together in the next to worst tier, just above Vanderbilt. Heck, the Gamecocks barely beat Vanderbilt, and they didn’t do it until Zeb Noland came in for Luke Doty and led a game-winning drive.

A big reason Tennessee football stayed low in these rankings is the fact that blowing out South Carolina and Mizzou were unimpressive. Well, that’s all changed now, as the Gamecocks have just beaten the brakes of Florida in a game that shocked everybody.

Another quarterback switch may have made all the difference. SC switched from Noland to Jason Brown in a loss to the Texas A&M Aggies, and Brown was the star. Now, Florida was without Anthony Richardson and reportedly got wrecked with the flu, so this team still has to prove what it did is legitimate.

That chance comes this week, as South Carolina can clinch a bowl with a win at Mizzou. After that, they host Auburn, but the Clemson Tigers at the end of the year aren’t a sure loss anymore. As a result, they have multiple paths to six wins, so watch out for Shane Beamer’s first team.
