Last week: Lost to Georgia Bulldogs 41-17

You really could make a strong case for Tennessee football to be down at No. 10. Sure, there’s no shame in losing to Georgia. There is shame, however, in losing to Florida, and that looks worse by the week. Meanwhile, the Vols are coming off a loss, Kentucky is coming off a win, and Kentucky did clinch a higher finish in the East.

The head-to-head matchup, though, is just barely enough for the Vols to be higher in our SEC Power Rankings right now. After all, that was just a week prior to that Georgia loss. Now, LSU playing teams close gave them a case to be here, but their losing streak combined with them falling by three touchdowns to UK earlier in the year gave the Vols the nod.

Josh Heupel’s first team on Rocky Top may be 5-5, but they are the overachievers of the year. Given the mess Heupel inherited, he has a case for SEC Coach of the Year if Kirby Smart doesn’t win it. Losing to UGA this past weekend doesn’t change that.

However, Tennessee football has to finish the job. They have effectively guaranteed themselves a winning record for 2021, but actually getting there involves beating the South Alabama Jaguars and then Vanderbilt at home to close out the season.
