Despite Tennessee football losing to the Pittsburgh Panthers last year at home, Pitt being ranked ahead of the Vols in both polls and Pitt playing this game at home, the Vols are somehow a touchdown favorite. Oh, Pitt is also coming off an 11-3 season, top 15 finish and ACC Championship while the Vols went 7-6 last year.

As for this year, the Vols looked great in their 59-10 win over the Ball State Cardinals. However, Pitt was better-tested in their 38-31 win over the West Virginia Mountaineers, and both teams have had 10 days to rest and get ready for this matchup. Given how familiar Josh Heupel and Pat Narduzzi are with each other, this matchup should be intriguing.

It’s the Johnny Majors Classic, as it was last year, since Majors won a national championship coaching at Pitt and was a legendary player and coach for the Vols. While Pitt comes in ranked No. 17 in the AP Poll and No. 14 in the Coaches Poll, UT comes in just ranked No. 24 in the AP Poll, so the Vols truly have something to prove here.

Prediction

Although Pitt runs a bit more ball control offense this year than last year, their quarterback play with Kedon Slovis and the tempo Josh Heupel runs with Hendon Hooker means this game will still hit the over. Expect a shootout. It was 41-34 last year, and UT’s offense is better.

That improvement is why the oddsmakers are right, and Tennessee football will win this game. Now, the Vols won’t cover, as a touchdown spread is too much for them, but Heupel will even his head-to-head series with Narduzzi at two. Take the Vols to win a close one with a strong start and a couple of late scores to get to 2-0.
