Vols Football: Justin Worley Named Tennessee’s Starting QB
By Zach Ragan
Tennessee Volunteers head coach Butch Jones confirmed on Thursday that Justin Worley will be the Vols’ starting quarterback in 2014.
Jones said the decision wasn’t based on a couple of practices, but it was based on Worley’s performance since the spring and into fall camp. He added that Worley is “playing the best football of his career…..he gives us the best chance to win”.
This is the outcome we expected in the Vols’ quarterback battle.
Worley is the most experienced of the Tennessee quarterbacks and with a team as young as the Vols will be in 2014, they need as much experience as they can get.
The Vols were heading in the right direction with Worley as the starter last season. It’s not unreasonable to expect an improvement in Worley from last season to this season. He has a considerable amount of weapons at his disposal that he didn’t have last season. Having Jalen Hurd, Von Pearson, Ethan Wolf and Josh Malone will only help Worley succeed.
If the Vols plan to make a bowl game this season — and at last check that is the plan — then Justin Worley had to be named the starter.
The Vols can now focus on giving Worley all of the first-team reps and he can continue to build chemistry with the first team offense.
Jones noted on Thursday that the competition for the backup quarterback job between Nathan Peterman and Josh Dobbs is “ongoing”.
