Vols 2014 Stat Projections: Devrin Young

When you think of the Tennessee Volunteers’ offensive weapons in 2014, you tend to think of players like Marlin Lane, Jalen Hurd, Marquez North and Von Pearson.

And that’s perfectly understandable. Those are the guys that are expected to be playmakers for the Vols in 2014.

But there is one player in particular that could be an X-factor for Tennessee this year — running back Devrin Young.

Young, who is moving back to running back after spending last year at wide receiver, is a guy that Butch Jones can get creative with this season.

The Knoxville native should serve as the team’s third-string running back this season. More importantly, he’ll be a versatile player that can catch the ball out of the backfield. I can envision Young lining up in the backfield along with Marlin Lane or Jalen Hurd, creating some interesting mismatches.

Not only will Young be an offensive weapon for the Vols this year, but he’ll also once again be involved in the return game.

Devrin Young isn’t going to be a threat to make any All-SEC lists. He’s not going to lead the team in receiving or rushing. But he’s a player that will provide matchup problems for opponents. If he’s used the right way, he’s a player that could be huge for the Vols in 2014.
